the mysterious misfit

Apparently, Wexford had a payday that encouraged many similar designs and knock-offs.

At the start of my Wexford journey, I accepted psuedo-Wexford companion pieces. As my collection grew, I sent most of them back into the thrift cycle. I still have the almost-Wexford bell, and the goes-well-with-Wexford glass drink coasters.

But then there is this large oval relish tray. I have two. They have every Wexford trait, but get no mention in Fire King & More, from the author’s extensive collection or reproduced catalog pages. The piece has exactly one hit online at Worthpoint, caching an old ebay listing that also wasn’t sure it was Wexford.

But the listing was missing a piece: the center section has a lid. I have one between the two trays.

On to the details:

Dimensions:

Height: 1.5″

Width: 9.5″

Length: 14.25″

Pattern Details:

Edge detail: Fluted band

Band width: .625″

Large diamond: varies from .325″ to 1.125″

Small diamond: band: .25″ handles: .125″

Small diamond band width: 1.25″

Starburst diameter: tray: 3.5″ x 2.5″ lid: 3″ x 2″

Number of starburst rays: tray: 12 lid: 10

Starburst location: bottom of tray and inside lid

Fluting location: edge of tray

Number of flutes: 44 (22 on each side)

Versatility: This relish tray is the only oval piece, so no exchanging of lids or solid stacking fits, but the size of this piece leaves it suitable for many different foods.

Edited, 07.14.25: With help from a woman currently writing a book on AH Wexford, this piece is Olivia lead crystal made in West Germany, roughly from the 1970s through the 1990s.
