shakers, real and pretend:

For all the Wexford I have collected, there have been few instances of rip-off or mock Wexford pieces that hold up to scrutiny. This unique divided tray is most likely Wexford, but isn’t documented anywhere to be found.

The salt and pepper shakers, as it goes, have documented identifiable counterfeits. And I now own three: two cobalt, and one dark green.

Dimensions:

Height: 4.25″

Width: 1.625″

Pattern Details: Jar:

Edge detail: none

Large diamond: .375″

Small diamond: .125″

Small diamond band width: .875″

Starburst location: none

The difference? The imposters are slightly smaller, in all ways. The diamond pattern, the width and height, are all scaled down from the Wexford shakers. The imposters have a metal cap, Wexford shakers have a plastic crome cap.

Most obviously, Anchor Hocking glass is made in the USA. Ohio specifically. And, unlike many pieces in the collection, they say so on the bottom. “USA” and their anchor logo.

The imposter? “MADE IN CHINA” – an obvious difference. I do enjoy the colors and the accuracy of the counterfeiting.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery, and there is little profit to copying unpopular items. Fake Wexford is commentary to the proliferation of the series, and I enjoy the conversations that come out of it as a part of my collection.
