the *other* chip-n-dip

This is the Chip-n-Dip of Wexford by Anchor Hocking. At least, that is the lie as I have been told. That is what auction sites tell you. That is what Anchor Hocking’s Fire-King and More by Gene Florence will tell you. That is what in-box Wexford Chip-n-Dip sets in thrift stores tell you.

But what if I were to tell you that there was another Wexford Chip-n-Dip? What if I were to tell you that a simple wire clip would turn a couple of my Wexford pieces into the original Chip-n-Dip? Right? I totally did the same thing…

the box isn’t mint, but it is glorious!

This is the style of Chip-n-Dip that my mom had when I was growing up (it was likely Anchor Hocking but not Wexford), the big chip bowl with a dip bowl clipped to its side. This is my go-to because it has volume for chips and height for a food spread.

from the days when every box for houseware was a pop-up display box

If you followed the link at the top of this post, it becomes obvious that this scalloped set is the elder of the two. Toward the end of the previous millenium, the scallops gave way to smooth edges, plus the modern Chip-n-Dip packaging is copyrighted to 2001, which was approaching the end of the run for Wexford.

The wire clip fits clean in the low points between scallops on the chip bowl, and the dip bowl sets into the wire loop.

However the shape of the ring is a bit off for the dip bowl, which is the smallest scalloped Wexford bowl. The fit results in an unstable bowl of dip, and who can have that at their gathering?

Fortunately, I have some of all of the scalloped bowls. Well, at least I think I have some of each of them. As discussed here, the scalloped bowls are: a sorbet cup, an individual salad bowl and serving bowl (sometimes described as a master salad serving bowl, but I consider it too small for that for most dinner settings).

The clip fits perfectly into the narrow recess created by the foot of the individual salad bowl. Nice and secure.

This is a delightful addition to our Wexford, and I am excited about it in the mix at our next open house, whenever that may be safely done in the future.

Also, if I manage to find, or learn a way to fabricate, addition wire clips, I have the individual Wexford pieces for a couple more sets…

07.31.21 Edit: Apparently, there was a third chip-n-dip set. At this point, it seems almost scandalous. As found on ebay:

Again, I have the individual Wexford pieces, just not the wire clip. I would also swap out the simpler salad bowl with the fancier scallop one.
